Lesley Gates-McCulley Lesley is the owner of Gates to HR www.gatestohr.com which she founded after leaving Phelps Dodge. She has extensive human resources management experience in diverse corporate and work site environments, including small business through Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies. Throughout her career she has created HR infrastructure and led project teams aimed at starting or working in a small business.

Jeffrey Taylor After a corporate career with Citibank and Peat Marwick, Jeffrey read an issue of Entrepreneur and became one. During his successful consulting career he published two textbooks which are still used by global financial institutions. In the last couple of years he has lectured on Sarbanes-Oxley to major financial institutions, developed business plans for start-up companies, prepared companies to go public, helped companies raise both private and public capital and made independent movies. His new book, Going from W2 to 1099?, will be published this summer.

If you are asked the question during an initial screening interview, you might say that you feel you need to know more about the position's responsibilities before you could give a meaningful answer to that question. Here, too, either by asking the interviewer or search executive (if one is involved), or in research done as part of your homework, you can try to find out whether there is a salary grade attached to the job. If there is, and if you can live with it, say that the range seems right to you.

If the interviewer continues to probe, you might say, "You know that I'm making $______ now. Like everyone else, I'd like to improve on that figure, but my major interest is with the job itself." Remember that the act of taking a new job does not, in and of itself, make you worth more money.

If a search firm is involved, your contact there may be able to help with the salary question. He or she may even be able to run interference for you. If, for instance, he tells you what the position pays, and you tell him that you are earning that amount now and would Like to do a bit better, he might go back to the employer and propose that you be offered an additional 10%.

If no price range is attached to the job, and the interviewer continues to press the subject, then you will have to restpond with a number. You cannot leave the impression that it does not really matter, that you'll accept whatever is offered. If you've been making $80,000 a year, you can't say that a $35,000 figure would be fine without sounding as if you've given up on yourself. (If you are making a radical career change, however, this kind of disparity may be more reasonable and understandable.)

Don't sell yourself short, but continue to stress the fact that the job itself is the most important thing in your mind. The interviewer may be trying to determine just how much you want the job. Don't leave the impression that money is the only thing that is important to you. Link questions of salary to the work itself.

But whenever possible, say as little as you can about salary until you reach the "final" stage of the interview process. At that point, you know that the company is genuinely interested in you and that it is likely to be flexible in salary negotiations.

SJN will be offering a special workshop for job seekers, Exploring Your Passion--and Putting it to Work, on Tues, April 29 at Temple Chai. The program runs from 9 AM-4 PM and has a limited enrollment of 30 participants.

"Passions," as we often refer to it, was created and has been presented to job seekers for several years by SJN Board Member and Facilitator, Maria Wojtczak. Read about the focus of the workshop:

Job seekers often limit themselves to what they have always done because it was the career that defined them for many years. They tend to lose sight of their many gifts, interests, strengths, and wealth of skills they developed through their life experience. This workshop utilizes proven tools to help individuals identify their strengths, talents and preferences - what they're basically good at and really enjoy doing! and can prove to be useful in opening up job search options.

Because of the need to purchase booklets, binders and printed materials, this workshop has a fee of $25.

Don't get eliminated!

At the end of each MXC (Most Extreme Elimination Challenge) episode on Spike TV they shout “Don’t get eliminated!” So, you ask yourself, what does that phrase have to do with job hunting? If you’re not careful, working with multiple recruiters can cause you to be eliminated from contention for a position you’re seeking.

If you are working with multiple recruiters it is important that you control your resume. Make sure you understand who your resume is being submitted to and by whom. Many companies will discard an individual’s resume which has been submitted to them by more than one vendor (recruiting company). They simply don’t want to get in the middle of the “I submitted him/her first” argument.

Although a smart recruiter will ask you where your resume has been submitted, don’t leave it up to them! Keep track of where your recruiters have submitted you. Let them know if you've already been submitted to a particular company. Doing so will keep you from being “eliminated” from a job before you’ve even had a chance to compete.

Leverage your recruiter!

In a previous blog I discussed how to utilize your recruiter to make your resume shine for a particular position/employer. So, now you’ve landed an interview. How can your recruiter help you through that process?

Your recruiter most likely has a relationship with the hiring manager, either directly or through their account manager. They should be able to help you with employer specific preparation. A short list includes:
· Where to show up, and at what time. Is there a trick to locating the building or the office in the building? Will you need to fill out an application prior to the interview?
· What to wear. Though it is always best to dress conservatively, some companies expect a certain level of attire. Your recruiter should have inside information on this.
· Who will be interviewing you? Will you be interviewing with one person, multiple people, in a group setting, or serially? Knowing this ahead of time will reduce any surprises.
· What to bring with you. How many copies of your resume should you bring? Should you bring samples of your work? You should always bring a pad of paper and a pen to take notes. You should also write your questions out ahead of time, so you won’t forget them.
· The type of interview to expect. Does the company practice behavioral, informational, or stress interviewing, or is it a mixture? Knowing the type of interview allows you to prepare for certain questions and how to answer them.
· What you need to know about the position, beyond the job description. Is this position replacing someone, or is it new? What’s the hiring manager like? Insight regarding the position can allow you to highlight the strengths they’re looking for.
· What you need to know about the company, beyond their website. What is the work culture? Insight about the company allows you to pose questions to see how you fit in.

There are a million (now a million and one) websites with suggestions on how to prepare for an upcoming interview. After you’ve read a number of those, be sure to leverage your recruiter to get the inside scoop!

How flexible are you?

As a recruiter I have direct access to hiring managers. This allows me to understand their needs beyond what is written in the job posting. Whether it’s information about the company culture, what they’re looking for in a candidate’s personality, or how they determine who they’d like to interview, I’ve got an inside track.

How can this help you? Well, for starters it lets me help you focus your resume for a particular position.

I know, I know, you’ve spent countless hours, and hundreds of dollars fine tuning your resume. You’ve had advice from everyone under the sun on how to format it, key words to use, and what catches an employer’s eye. That’s great; you’re 90% there (well, most of the time)! The last 10% is where your recruiter comes in.

If you’re a good fit for a position I’m filling I want to be sure your resume accentuates the needs of the hiring manager. If I ask you to add some bullets to highlight various experiences of your career, I’m doing so with your best interests in mind. Be flexible, make the updates, it just might get you an interview.

Oh, and if I didn’t ask you to change anything, don’t be afraid to ask if there’s anything you can do to give your resume the edge. I, and whoever your recruiter is, will be glad to help.

Things that make me go "Hmmmmm."

As a recruiter I post job openings on various job boards. My goal, of course, is to find the best candidate for my client. So, candidates, be sure to put your best foot forward from the beginning!

To start with, please read the post! Does the job fit your experience and skill level? Does the post have special instructions on how to apply for the position?

How a candidate replies to a job post tells me a lot about them. I typically ask for a Word formatted resume and that it be sent to a specific email address with a job code in the subject area. You're starting off on the right foot if you do all three of these things! It shows you've read my instructions and it makes my job easier. (Hey, I like that!)

Cover letters and/or introduction emails are a good thing! I can't tell you how many people send me resumes with a blank email. You don't need to write a book. Simply state that you have an interest in position "xyz" and would like more information, or would like to discuss it. Also, be sure to include your contact information and the best time to call. If you want to add in some specifics about your experience that make you perfect for the job, great!

Take another look at the job description and skill requirements. Are you a match? Are you significantly under or over qualified? If you feel you're a match or close to a match, by all means apply for the position. If you're a truck driver (nothing against truck drivers, honest), then you probably shouldn't be applying to a senior database administration position.
